THEME: VIRTUE, MORE VALUABLE THAN GOLD
AUTHOR: Rev’d Israel A. Adegbite
TEXT: Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
Virtue is a moral and ethical standard manifesting in godliness. As well, virtue is any admirable quality or attribute works of great merit. It means the quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong. Also, virtue, according to Christian ethics, is one of the three virtues (faith and hope and charity) created by God to round out the natural virtues. Unfortunately many in the world today have rated riches above virtues. To them, wealth is better than good names and virtuous characters. Men are no more desperate to abide by the Godly rules and regulations; everyone is going after the fraudulent and treacherous short cut to riches. They would rather stockpile gold and silver than keep their spiritual relationship with the Almighty God. Majority of people now engage in rats race; introducing gimmicks, guiles, and schemes to outwit and take the advantage of the weakness of other fellas. Listen to this scriptural, correct evaluation in Prov 8:10 “Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold”. Even many believers do not realize the truth that God does not qualify or commend man by the yardstick of enormous possessions. God doesn’t judge man by action, rather He assess man by intention. Why? Because it is the virtue you embrace that will determine the decision you uphold. I admonish you arise and imbibe great virtue over craving endlessly for uncertain lucre. Without sounding hypocritical, money is very good indeed for the acquisition of wants; but virtue is more potent, for it produces the enviable all round completeness. Hear this in Prov 16:16 “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!”. I pray: May you henceforth be able to operate with Godly virtue. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
