THEME: DIVINE RETRIBUTION
AUTHOR: Rev’d Israel A. Adegbite
TEXT: Psalm 91:1 “O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself”.
Retribution is a justly applied penalty for an offence or a wrongdoing. It is a vengeance reaction against adversaries and foes. Divine retribution simply means harvesting the seed of some sinful act. It is an invariable truth that the seed sown type answers to the fruit reaped kind. Listen to this in Hosea 8:7 “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind …..”. As light begets light; and deep calls unto the deep; so it is with people’s actions and inactions. The inputs determines the outputs. All notable Bible characters became either famous or notorious by the qualities and the quantities of their exhibited contributions. Definitely, God is a rewarder of all works of man; whether good or bad. The recompense is the justice that should be expected by all men. See this in Gal 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”. Where everyone is today is not a function of luck; rather it is the manifestation of earlier works. Of course, grace is the maker of a man; but man must work on (and at) something worthwhile for the grace to complement. A truant student who plays away needs not be disappointed during the examination. It is what you give that shall be given back unto you in greater measures. Therefore, retribution is a boomerang effect of all misconducts. No sinful man; except by the grace of Jesus; can escape the retributive sword of Damocles. Listen to Romans 12:19 “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord”. Retributive justice belongs only to God’s sovereign discretion. I pray for a believer today: The blood of Jesus saves you from the vengeance of God. May the blood of Jesus clear away your sins, guilt and due punishment. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
